hello, 2021.
“my auntie simone used to paint the same seascape all the time. she was obsessed with the ocean, the horizon, and the way the waves kissed the sky. her basement studio in atlantic city was filled with different hues of blue and green and sea foam and sand.
when i was little, i remember sitting in her studio, watching her put the finishing touches on a new piece. and i was confused. so i asked why she kept painting the same scene over and over. to which she replied very solemnly, ‘because the waves whisper something different to me, every time i watch them.’
rebecca lindenberg once wrote, ‘but all i want is to see the same landscape a thousand times and never repeat myself.’ i never completely understood my aunt until i found myself rooted in the sand, watching the sun come up yet another time.” — excerpt from a poem draft, august 2020
